Laura is the author of "Choosing to Heal" which focuses on the treatment of child sexual abuse. She provides training and legal consultation for mental health and legal professionals to increase their understanding of the impact of child sexual abuse on individuals and families. She is often retained to testify in trials and hearings about child sexual abuse. Custody and Visitation Evaluations are conducted to determine the "best interests" of the child. Best interest is defined as the custody or visitation arrangement that best fulfills the needs of the specific children involved and fosters their normative development. The evaluation will identify: o The ability of each parent to meet the emotional and physical needs of each child. o The quality of each parent's relationship to each child. o The relationship between the parents and their ability to support their child's ongoing relationship with the other parent. o Parenting skills of each parent. Evaluations include both in office and in home interviews. Information is gathered by face to face contact, questionnaires, legal document review, collateral contacts and direct observation of family interactions. Psychological Testing and Diagnostic Labels are not given as part of the evaluation process. There is a high level of objectivity encountered between different mental health professionals in what the outcomes of these instruments identify and in defining psychological labels.
